Nuclear powers role in environmental protection :: essays research papers
Nuclear power's role in environmental protection | Nuclear techniques for environmental protection Nuclear power can be an effective tool in reducing stress on the environment. Environmental concerns are high on today's political agenda. People's awareness of the planet's precarious health has been reinforced by scientific warnings that quick, vigorous, and sustained action must be taken if we are to preserve the world in which we live. Public perception and anxiety about acid rain, ozone layer depletion, and the greenhouse effect have been heightened in recent years. Enhanced awareness offers an unprecedented opportunity for members of the world community to make rational, informed decisions in the environmental debate. Energy, in particular electricity generation, is fundamental to social and economic development. The use of hydropower, coal, oil and gas has helped to stimulate economic growth and raise the standards of living of people worldwide. All major forms of electricity generation, however, have some effect on the environment, frequently with starkly negative results. The burning of fossil fuels, scientists say, can contribute some 50 percent to the warming of the global atmosphere. Man's harnessing of these resources involves risks to the environment, as well as to people involved in activities associated with energy technologies. The link between energy and the environment is undeniable. The world must therefore carefully examine its energy alternatives, and alternatives must be found to reduce the influence of fossile fuels on the environment, in parallel with conservation efforts. Nuclear energy can claim to be a clean, economical option for the generation of electricity and as one when looking at ways to help relieve stress on the environment. Conclusions of the 14th Congress of the World Energy Conference in Montreal in late September, 1989 indicate that environmental effects of energy uses and the world's growing demand for electricity are prime reasons warranting a renewed emphasis on nuclear power. Conservation is a significant, realistic, and necessary element in trying to reduce the burning of fossil fuels. Conservation implies both a more efficient and more discriminating use of energy. But, as the former International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Director General Dr. Hans Blix has said, current plans of developing countries foresee a sharp increase in the use of fossil fuels. This means that if we are to succeed in stabilizing and indeed diminishing the greenhouse effect, industrialized countries must make the major effort. Nuclear power can be one effective tool in this vital endeavour.

Problems with Affirmative Action Essay -- Reverse Discrimination
Affirmative Action à à à à à For many years, people have presumed that Affirmative Action has played and continues to play a vital and important role in the lives of most minorities . However, some people have raised questions about the effectiveness of Affirmative Action. Since it's conception, it has been believed that in some instances, Affirmative Action has been more harmful then helpful. One may ask the question, is Affirmative Action really worth fighting for? Some may argue, that if it had not been for Affirmative Action, the minority unemployment rate would be much higher. à à à à à Like any program, Affirmative Action has its flaws. One major downside occurs when employers over look one's credentials and hires people solely on the color of their skin. It can not be denied however, that Affirmative Action has aided in the struggle to bring about the social inclusion of minorities in the work place and schools. When society begins to misuse the Affirmative Action programs and begins using it as a form of reverse discrimination, then it becomes hard for sates to continue implementing it . These programs where not intended to take job opportunities away from qualified white applicants. If anything, Affirmative Action was meant to be administered by way of the least intrusive means. This program was created to allow minorities to have the same chance to excel in the workforce that the average Caucasian has. I have to admit, I am a strong supporter of Affirmative Action and equ...

Playing Beatie Bow Essay
Kirk was a happy young girl who was cheery and enthusiastic towards her parents and life, until the day her father went off with another woman leaving her and her mother (Kathy). Lynette wanted nothing to do with her father so she changed her name to try and get everything about him out of her life. After wanting to be named after a witch she changed her name to Abigail, which her grandmother suggested. She went down to the park with her young next door neighbours Natalie and Vincent, finding them playing a game called, ââ¬ËBeatie Bowââ¬â¢. After becoming very interested in a little girl that stood there watching them play (Little Furry Girl) she decided to follow her. This was after having a fight with her mother, when she told Abigail that she had been seeing her father again and that he wanted the two of them to move back in with him and live in Norway where his architectural job was located. Abigail did not take this news well ââ¬â She went for a walk to cool off, when she once again saw the little furry girl and following her found that she had followed her back into her own time of 1873. She got tripped over by the Little Furry Girlââ¬â¢s father, then found herself at their house. Further into the novel the character Granny (Alice Tallisker) told Abigail that she was ââ¬Ëthe strangerââ¬â¢ and had ââ¬Ëthe giftââ¬â¢. ââ¬ËThe giftââ¬â¢ came from the crochet on the top of her dress which enabled her to travel and heal. Later in the book it mentions that the crochet was made by Granny. She falls in love with Judah, who was betrothed to Dovey, and realised firsthand what itââ¬â¢s like to love somebody but no be able to have them. This helped Abigail realise that she should not be selfish towards her parents and should let them have a second chance of a decent life and marriage. During the time that she was in the past Abigail matured by being influenced by the people that surrounded her, the world in which she lived and the events which occurred there.

Review of Marie Antoinette the Movie
Movie Review: Marie Antoinette As we all known the reign of Queen Marie Antoinette ended quite brutally with her head being cut off during the French Revolution. However, this movie tries not to displace such gruesome details. It merely ends with the royal family in a carriage on their way to Paris or others might call it ââ¬Ëtheir doomââ¬â¢. Marie Antoinette, the movie was written and directed by Sofia Coppola starring Bring It Onââ¬â¢s, Kirsten Dunst. In this movie Kirsten Dunst portrays Marie Antoinette how many of us believe she was. My view of Marie Antoinette seems a little bit less innocent however. In this version of the royal familiesââ¬â¢ life they arenââ¬â¢t mean or vindictive theyââ¬â¢re plainly quite naive. They do not realize how much they are spending they just care about having fun and being care free. Being a girl I personally love shoes and the shoes that Marie Antoinette had designed were beautiful. There was a large array of colors and styles that drew them instantly to the eye. As well as shoes the costumes in the film weââ¬â¢re beautiful. There were many different gowns in baby blue, pink, and cream. I extremely liked how in the scenes in the Retreat house Dunst wore white peasantry dresses that almost made her look angelic. Throughout the beginning of the movie there was quite a lot of comic relief. Whether it is from the kingââ¬â¢s mistress or something else. The best part by far is when Dunst is standing waiting to be dressed, naked, and her undergarments keep getting handed off because new women of higher class than the last keep coming into the room. Dunst is standing theyââ¬â¢re freezing trying to understand French society and so far she thinks itââ¬â¢s quite blatantly absurd. I donââ¬â¢t blame her seeing as how these women are taking quite a long time coming in and taking their gloves off. If you were to only to watch the first half of the film you might even think it to be a comedy. Marie Antoinette was a lovely film. Filled with many twists and turns that were unexpected which in turn made the movie interesting and exciting to watch. Even though it runs for two long hours and twenty horrific minutes, it does not seem so at all and you will be pleasantly delighted by the end I guarantee it.

Why did the Continental Congress select George Washington of Virginia Research Paper
Why did the Continental Congress select George Washington of Virginia to command its army Assess Washingtons service as commander of the Continental forces - Research Paper Example He was designated as the General and Commander in Chief of the United Colonies (Schwartz 20). It is apparent that several factors must have influenced the Continental congress decision in selecting George Washington to be the Commander of the continental forces. He was a Southerner and delegates believed he was the best man who could unite all the colonies (Martin 25). George Washington was also wealthy; hence the delegates of the Continental congress believed that Washington could not be influenced by corruption in his duties. George Washington was also courageous and fearless and a determined competent leader. He was going to head a military which was under civilian rule of the new congress. Washington understood fully all his functions as a military leaders since he choose strategies, operations and tactics which led to victory (Martin 32). In March 1776, he carried out his first tactical attack by occupying the Dorchester Heights after planting artillery which brought down Fort Ticonderoga. This move forced British to evacuate from Boston. Washington courage made him cross to Delaware on a cold and stormy night where he attacked Hessian garrison of Trenton, New Jersey and captured more than 900 prisoners. Tactically he avoided British forces traps from a large force which was deployed in Trenton. His success and withdrawal to Princeton compelled the British forces to eastern New Jersey. He continued attaining victories by mastering his battlefield strategies. He held the army together and avoided any discontentment amongst his Continental forces (Schwartz 28). He confronted General Howeââ¬â¢s forces in Philadelphia but was defeated but did not give up hence he decided to relocate to York. His tactical capabilities made him decide to send his well trained forces to the North in order to counter any threat of invasion from Canada by British force which was under General Burgoyne. He prevented the attempts of General Howe to rescue General

TELENURSING Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
TELENURSING - Research Paper Example In the field of nursing, there have been such kinds of technological development that target to address the problems of long distance between the caregivers and the receivers of the care. This has led to the development of a telecommunication system in nursing that enhances communication and ensures that many people from distant places can receive care according to the plan. Tele-nursing is a technology that ensures that communication in the field of nursing is easier than when the nurses have to travel to the places where patients are situated. This technology has come to ensure that the services like consultation, patient education, examination of test results and, therefore, assisting the physicians to administer treatment and the technology are used in transmission of medical record from one place to another. This technology in nursing has a lot of benefits that can ensure that nurses are able to provide care to as many patients as they could at a low cost and within a short time (MEDINFO, Kuhn, Warren & Leong, 2007). Discussion Background Nursing practitioners offer a variety of services to their clients and in different places in the world. This means that these nurses are required to travel to different places to meet their clients and provide the services that they need and carry out a follow up to the things that they need to ensure that those clients recover from their ailments. At one time, a nurse may have more than five patients whose health statuses he or she needs to track and afterwards prepare a report that shows the history of the services they have offered. When patients are not located within the same locality, the nurse may have to travel too much, and therefore, he or she will spend a lot of money on transport to achieve his or her goals. This means that the development of a system that would reduce frequent movement to patients is good to ensure that they can receive nursing care at their convenient time. The development of tele-nursing i s a technological development that will ensure that many patients can access the required services from anywhere in the world (Briggs, 2007). Services offered through Tele-nursing Tele-nurses offer similar services as other nurses who use travelling mode to avail information to and acquire it from patients in a particular place in the world. This means that all people who need care from the nurses link up through telecommunication systems to get the information they need in their different situations. The services that these patients receive may vary according to the problem from which they are suffering and which may need immediate or delayed care. Briggs (2007) notes that the services that tele-nurses offer include professional consultancy in which a patient seeks information about a particular condition. The tele-nurse involved in a situation may choose from various media through which he or she can provide the information that his or her client needs. This could be through calli ng, sending text message, faxing, emailing or any other electronic method that conveniently transmit information from one place to another. Tele-nurses transmit medical records that physicians may need to enable them to administer treatment to a patient who seeks care from them. This will mean that they will not need to transport through physical means the records that they have collected about the patient for whom they are caring. Tele-nurses may transmit this information

Market Research Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Market Research - Essay Example Because of the developments in technology over time, the marketing industry has evolved greatly where marketers now have to embrace social media as an invaluable marketing tool. This is because social media has facilitated instant consultation among consumers and this has led to reversal of traditional branding where consumers now have more power owing to influence through social media. In addition, traditional media sources such as televisions have been rendered ineffective as computer networks have come up, rapid online communication and multiple sources of information have become available (Patino & Pitta 234-235). Snacks and pastries business This paper looks into the marketing research process of a snacks and pastries business to be undertaken close to a university/ college and office buildings. The idea is to lease out a truck that would serve as the ââ¬Ëshopââ¬â¢ and kitchen for the business from which snacks such as samosas, kebabs, sandwiches, cupcakes, doughnuts and s oft drinks. This is because my friend and I have noticed that we are usually lacking time to sit down at a restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Sometimes even for dinner we end up ordering out as we are tired from school and extracurricular activities. The only free time we have is Saturday evenings where we do our cleaning and because we both enjoy cooking, experiment on new recipes. She loves meat so she tries out meaty snacks while I, having a sweet tooth, try out pastries and cakes recipes. This pinpoints a need in the market, which is a part of the process involved in market research. Next, we identified that there isnââ¬â¢t competition nearby, the closest food truck is about ten minutes away. Still, people are fond of it ourselves included; therefore, we intend to compete with this by offering fresh, quality snacks and pastries at affordable prices. Because we are passionate about cooking, we intend to come up with innovative recipes for our products, which will give us comp etitive advantage. Statistics on the product Cinnamon rolls and cupcakes are listed among the top 25 most American foods which is an indication of their demand and high preference across all age groups. The list also includes meaty snacks such as beef burgers and chicken sandwiches thus, we intend to make our meaty snacks using chicken and beef initially (Lutz). In addition, dried meat snacks were reported to bring in sales of $1.19 billion in 2012 which is a 12.4% rise compared to the previous year. This coupled with the fact that Hillshire Brandsââ¬â¢ CEO stating that consumers desire protein in their snacks which creates a need in the market and indicates earning potential of the business (Riell,). Due to the fact that the meat jerky was reported as being resilient in the course of 2007 to 2012, despite the economic recession, we intend to use this in our sandwiches- mostly chicken and beef. This has been attributed to the fact that meat jerky has a low price that has continue d to sustain consumer sentiments. Notably also, because it is a dried product it can be stored longer making it favorable for our business idea (IBISWorld). Target Audience and Cost Considerations The main target audience for the business is college and university
